The story of Pocahontas and her Powhatan people has captivated the minds of millions of kids around the world, making for popular Disney movies, and shows. However, what they don’t tell you about the real story is that her alleged English friend John Smith described her father, and some of her people as black.

The story of Pocahontas has captivated millions of people around the world but especially in the United States. This is mainly due to the big screen, where her story was adopted by Disney starting in June of 1995 generating over $330 million at the box office. Yet despite this success the film still received a fair share of criticism and rightfully so for its historical inaccuracies. The film's romanticized depiction of Pocahontas and John Smith's relationship, as well as its portrayal of the Powhatan people as one-dimensional savages, have been particularly problematic. In reality, Pocahontas was likely only around 11 years old when she met John Smith, and their relationship was likely non-romantic. She would end up being forced to marry John Rolfe to which she would travel to England and die on the way back.
