Mound Bayou, once hailed as the Jewel of the Delta, stands as a testament to the remarkable achievements of its founders and the challenges faced by Foundational Black Americans during a tumultuous era. Established in 1887, this historic town was founded by former slaves, including cousins Isaiah T. Montgomery, Joshua P. T. Montgomery, and Benjamin T. Green, who had previously worked at the Davis Bend Plantation in Warren County. Drawing inspiration from the cooperative and self-sufficient practices of the plantation, these visionary individuals embarked on an extraordinary journey to create a thriving community in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.
