Lala Sukuna: The Black Man Who Shaped Modern Fiji
Visionary Leadership and Enduring Legacy in the Pacific Nation !
Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, born on April 22, 1888, on the island of Bau in Fiji, stands as a monumental figure in the history of Fiji. A chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman, Sukuna’s contributions to his nation laid the groundwork for self-government and modern institutions, significantly shaping the path to Fiji's independence in 1970. His vision, leadership, and dedication to his people made him a pivotal figure in the development of Fiji, ensuring his legacy would endure long after his death in 1958.
Early Life and Education
Lala Sukuna was born into a chiefly family, with his father, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, being the son of a Bauan noble and his mother, Adi Litiana Maopa, a sister to the High Chief of Lau. This noble lineage provided Sukuna with an early exposure to leadership and governance. His father’s connections proved decisive in Sukuna’s life, as they facilitated his access to education and opportunities that were rare for indigenous Fijians at the time. Sukuna attended the Wairuku Indian School in Ra and later received private tuition from the Rev. Charles Andrew, an Oxford-educated clergyman. His academic prowess led him to the prestigious Wanganui Collegiate School in New Zealand, where he excelled in various disciplines.
Military Service and Academic Achievements
Sukuna's academic journey was interrupted by World War I, during which he demonstrated his commitment to his people and the British Empire by enlisting in the French Foreign Legion, after being refused enlistment in the British Army due to a policy against exploiting native peoples. He fought bravely, earning the Croix de Guerre before returning to Fiji. His war hero status enabled him to secure funds to return to Oxford, where he completed his studies in history and law, becoming the first Fijian to receive a university degree. This achievement was a testament to his determination and intellectual prowess.
